Depression or Normal Sadness?

Today UPS delivered my copies of “Good Mood Bad Mood” to give to  friends. I really hope that this book will help people understand the difference  between normal sorrow and depression. Sorrow is a normal part of our being that
God wants to use to draw us to Himself. If we understand that difference then  our sadness can be useful. Normal sadness has an identifiable cause and a  beginning. The intensity of the sadness is related the size of the problem we
face. It generally resolves when the problem ends or we adapt to it. Paul said  in 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.”One goal of “Good Mood Bad Mood is to  help the reader to tell the difference between normal sadness and our current  definition of depression. If we understand that much then many people can find
the way out of a sad mood and into a life “without regret.” Next time we will  talk about the purpose and use of sadness from a biblical viewpoint.

Hello Friends, I am runningdoc aka Charles D Hodges Jr MD. I have been tweeting for a year about counseling people who struggle from the wisdom found in the Bible. This month Shepherd Press has published my book on mood disorders "Good Mood Bad Mood"and that explains the name of this website. I hope to use this space at least once a week (or more as I get better at it) to help people as they look for answers to problems  with moods and behavior. I will continue my daily tweets that should show up on this site as well. I believe that real progress in dealing with our moods can be made if we understand the difference between normal sadness and depression.  More to come...
